How Do I Pick An Avocado?

Choose a perfectly ripe avocado and use that same day, if possible. It should feel lightly soft, not firm, and not mush. The softness should have some resistance. The color is important too. Check out this article to learn how to pick an avocado and how to tell if an avocado is ripe.

Avocado Prep Tips

Avocados are soft enough to use a butter knife. I slice my avocado in half, following around the pit in the center, not cutting through the pit. Ditch the butter knife when removing the pit. Use a spoon instead, by placing the spoon’s edge under the pit and lift it out of the fruit. Another way to safely remove an avocado pit is to use your fingers. First, place your thumb on the back of the avocado and your index and pointer fingers on the sides of the pit. Then push with your thumb from the outside until it comes out. Metal knives will turn your sliced avocado brown, this is particularly the case when storing an avocado for later.

Avocado shells are compostable! You can compost avocado pits, avocado skins, and even unusable or brown avocado meat.

How To Preserve Green Avocado:

To keep the cut avocado from browning, cut up some onion, line the bottom of a container, and place the avocado on top with the cut side up. Then cover and store in the refrigerator. Read more about this great hack on How to Keep an Avocado Fresh.

How to Spread Avocado:

Put a dollop of the spread onto your toast and spread with a butter knife or the back of a spoon. Swirl the avocado spread around until the surface area is covered to your liking. I like to do this quickly so it doesn’t seep into my toast. For a chucky avocado spread, grab a fork and mash for a chunky consistency. For a creamy avocado spread, you can use a potato masher for a smoother consistency.

Mincing fresh garlic is well worth the effort and only takes a few minutes!

Is minced garlic in a jar the same as fresh garlic?

No, the difference is the flavor, but use what you have on hand. Fresh garlic is substantially more flavorful than jarred garlic.

How to Mince Garlic

For quick and easy I use a garlic press, otherwise, I use a chef’s knife and hone my chopping skills. With garlic, you will peel away a clove from the head. You can smash with a knife blade or your palm, for easy peeling. Peel away the skin and slice off the hard end of the clove. Mince with a knife or a garlic press.
